Plungers are shifting valves which directly control the process of gear shifting. The solenoid puts pressure on a specific channel of the valve body and the valve switches - directing oil flow to the particular clutch. Even slight sticking of clogged (or worn) valves firstly leads to jolts in the process gear shifting, and then results in the clutch slippage
