Recently the German automaker VW has issued a recall of the Jetta Hybrid, the only hybrid model included by VW for the US market, for a transmission issue. This model comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (also known as DSG).

Recently, ŠKODA AUTO’s transmission manufacturing facility in Vrchlabí, one of the most technically advanced VW’s sites, has produced the 3-millionth DQ200 automatic direct-shift transmission (DSG). This landmark event underlines the plant’s importance within VW’s global production network. It is said that currently the factory in Vrchlabí manufactures approximately 2,200 DSG units every day.

VW AUSTRALIA has recently announced a recall of 63,000 VW, 14,000 Audi, and 4500 Skoda models produced between 2009-2015 to take measures against possible DSG unit issues.

In recent years, dual-clutch transmissions gained popularity among major automakers. These advanced units found application not only in powerful passenger cars, but also in numerous luxury cars. But when it comes to racing competitions, DCTs are still mainly ignored by most of racing teams. But why?

Nowadays, the world’s leading car manufacturers actively install pre-selective gearboxes (also known as DSG or robotic gearboxes) in their new car models. This type of transmission is considered to be an ideal substitute for traditional automatic transmissions and CVTs. In this article, we will review a bright DSG option – S-tronic.

Talented Russian engineer Maxim Savinov from St. Petersburg has created a working prototype of a new type of transmission, combining the main positive features of manual transmissions and CVTs.

Recently at the CTI Symposium in Berlin, the British company Ricardo has presented its cutting-edge e-motor as well as a new dual-clutch transmission (DCT) solution with the east-west mounting, which is notable for its compact size and integration capacities with an e-motor in hybrid vehicles.

Fifteen years ago, the German carmaker VW presented the 1-st dual clutch gearbox (DSG) for high-volume manufacturing, a sophisticated gearbox solution for present-day cars. More fuel-saving and efficient than any automatic transmission before, the DSG changed the perception of the gear shifting process, especially in the compact cars.

The abbreviation “DSG” stands for Direkt Schalt Getrieb and literally means “Direct Shift Gearbox”. In fact, this is only one of many types of preselective automated gearboxes equipped with two clutches. Basically, DSG it is the manual transmission with the automated control.

Tiptronic is a trade name of the manual gear shifting function (mode), which is implemented in the automatic transmissions. In the world of the automobile industry the name Tiptronic is used to define automatic transmissions of a specific design and control method regardless of the actual developer and producer of the transmission.

Currently it seems that the whole automobile industry became obsessed with more and more sophisticated transmission solutions. So why more gears? The list of potential advantages of such solution includes smoother shifts, enhanced fuel efficiency, and improved performance characteristics, but it's not all that simple......

Skoda announced that the company’s factory in Vrchlabi, Czech Republic, achieved a significant milestone of 2 million produced dual-clutch transmissions DQ200. The factory in Vrchlabi became of the Skoda manufacturing network more than 70 years ago.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.
