Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

ATC Drivetrain Takes Over ATP

Recently, ATC Drivetrain (“ATC”), a leading independent remanufacturer of car transmission parts located in Oklahoma, has reached an agreement on the takeover of ATP with its founder Alan Smart. Financial conditions of the deal are still kept private.

Established half a century ago, the UK-based ATP company is one of the largest European remanufacturers of automatic gearboxes, including torque converters, AMTs, transmission control units. Moreover, the company produces diagnostics units and offers related services. The list of ATP’s customers includes numerous OE manufacturers and suppliers from all over the world.

Alan Smart

According to Mr. Smart, after half a century of successful work in the industry he concluded that it was a high time for the company to take the next step in its development. In his view, the promising combination of technologies and expertise from both companies will make it possible for ATP to expand the list of provided services and secures the future of ATP specialists, many of whom have been with the company for several decades. Mr. Smart has no doubts that joining ATC is the right choice for his business and that ATC’s CEO Greg Heald will find the way to unleash the potential of ATC/ATP merger to the full extent.

Greg Heald

Mr. Heald, in turn, said that ATC’s team and its investor Crestview Partners respect and value the contribution of Mr. Smart to the development of ATP. Mr. Smart’s philosophy and expertise helped ATP to make significant progress in the remanufacturing industry. Mr. Heald also thinks that the abovementioned deal will help both companies to not only exchange the experience and achievements in different technologies, but also adopt common visions related to provision of top-quality services to their customers.

Alex Rose, representative of the stock company Crestview Partners, said that the takeover of ATP is ATC’s 1-st deal since being bought by Crestview last year. He emphasized the fact that ATC’s senior management has been doing its best to expand the company’s product portfolio and to strengthen its positions on the world market. The purchase of ATP creates a company with vast experience (more than 130 years combined) in the auto remanufacturing industry, which is capable of meeting demands of the increased customer demand worldwide.
