Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Ground Breaks For Cibolo's New Transmission Plant

Ground Breaks For Cibolo's New Transmission Plant

AW Texas, an affiliate of Aisin AW Co. Ltd., broke ground on its 3-rd transmission production facility in the US. The 159-acre plant, placed in Cibolo, TX, will be specialized in manufacturing of automatic transmission units. This promising project should create about 900 new jobs to the area during the next 5 years.

Aisin AW started operating in the form of a JV partnership with BorgWarner in 1969 as Aisin Warner. In 1987, Aisin was renamed into Aisin AW and continued operating in the transmission industry, eventually founding an R&D center in Michigan and then a manufacturing site in North Carolina, which currently operates as the provider of transmission units for Toyota San Antonio.

The foundation stone laying ceremony took place less than 2 months after the Japanese maker of car transmissions announced that it had selected Cibolo for its 3-rd plant in the US. That news leaked the same day Toyota conducted a press briefing announcing it would put $391 mln into expansion of its San Antonio plant. It is planned that the new plant will launch a large-scale production in September 2021, realizing the state’s potential in the automotive industry. Manufacturing has an estimated $40 bln economic effect on Texas, where the automotive production involves approximately 43,000 workers.

News report on the event

According to Aisin AW officials, construction of the new facility is a major step forward for introduction of local production in North America. The plant will manufacture automatic transmissions for Toyota’s trucks and hybrids produced in San Antonio. Toyota’s choice of San Antonio to invest significant financial resources in plant upgrades is what opened doors for other suppliers to move into the region.
