Eaton Testing HD Transmission for Commercial Vehicles
As a part of its E-Mobility strategy, Eaton
plans to start the production of a brand-new 4-speed transmission for HD
electrically-driven commercial vehicles (CVs) to satisfy the increasing global
demand for environmentally-friendly automotive solutions all over the world.
This advanced transmission unit, developed for Class 7 and 8 CVs, is currently under extensive testing with major OEMs and is assumed to hit the market in 2022. The formal statement from company representatives is expected to be made at the NACV exhibition. This product is the latest addition to Eaton’s growing product range of e-transmissions and other elements, which also includes gear shifting solutions that are also currently used by some truck makers.
New HD transmission
from Eaton
The new solution has to deal with 2 main problems occurring in single-speed drives: problems of effectiveness at top speeds and enhanced torque at start and slow speeds. Specific design of helical gears used in the new gearbox helps to guarantee a smooth and noiseless functioning. The TCU’s shifting algorithm is programmed for rapid gear shifting and increased effectiveness, simultaneously increasing range and battery resource. The new solution is designed on the basis of standard, durable and effective intermediary shaft design peculiar to AMTs, but for CVs.
Learn more about Eaton
In contrast to standard CV gearboxes, Eaton’s design does not include a clutch, and gear changes are synchronized by means of the motor. It also can function at higher speeds than its standard transmission analogs paired with IC-engines. Moreover, Eaton specialists managed to optimize gears for standard e-motor operation and power curves, ensuring the highest possible performance capacity.
