Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Lukoil Launches Production of New Transmission Fluids

Recently, Lukoil, a Russian oil company, has announced the start of production of its new line of specialized transmission fluids. According to the company’s press service, three types of fluids included in the ATF Synth line will be produced at Lukoil plants located in Russia. These products will be intended for lubrication of automatic transmissions, CVTs, and steering booster.

The Russian company claims that new product will become an affordable alternative to branded transmission fluids of this category, produced under the brands of car manufacturers.

  • Lukoil ATF Synth Asia is a synthetic oil for 4- and 5-speed automatic transmissions and power steerings installed in vehicles of Asian brands; the product complies with GM Dexron IIIH specification and JASO M315 Type 1A standard.
  • The second product, named Lukoil ATF Synth VI, is intended for Asian, European, and American car brands equipped with 6-, 7-, 8-speed automatic transmissions. The product is licensed under the GM Dexron VI specification, and according to the manufacturer, this fluid can replace 15 types of popular OEM fluids.
  • And finally, Lukoil ATF Synth CVTF, as its name implies, as designed for continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), not including toroidal and hybrid transmissions. According to Lukoil, this product has better anti-wear properties when compared to OEM fluids.

All products included in the new product range are made on the basis of high quality base oil belonging to Group III +, therefore they are notable for high efficiency at low temperatures. According to Lukoil representatives, transmissions filled with fluids from the ATF Synth family are characterized by smooth operation in winter conditions, even without a warm-up.
