Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

New SuperMatic 6L80E Transmission is Presented at SEMA 2019

GM has presented a new transmission solution for high-horsepower builds during the SEMA 2019 exhibition. Company’s representatives say that the new 6-speed automatic unit named as SuperMatic 6L80E ensures an impressive performance/efficiency ratio when paired with Chevrolet Performance’s (CP) LS and LSX crate engines.

In fact, this solution is a modified version of the HydraMatic 6L80E unit installed in a variety of RWD models manufactured by GM. The new unit is complemented with specific spare parts that significantly increased its torque capacity (up to 881 Nm). This is a 45% boost when compared to a standard 6L80E unit, making it an ideal choice for performance-oriented cars.

The new transmission is also notable for a “deep” 4.02 first-gear ratio, which is good for powerful engines capable of intensive operation right from the start. The 0.67 ratio top gear also facilitates to reduction of RPM rates on highways, preventing unreasonable high engine revs and ensuring optimized fuel consumption. This gear shifting solution is a part of GM’s product line of “Connect & Cruise” solutions, which are intended for coupling of a wide range of CP crate engines. A comprehensive chart in the CP catalog contains a description of the required elements and their IDs, simplifying a search process for an ideal powertrain solution.

According to CP representatives, Connect & Cruise systems allow engineers to save much time when it comes to selecting the right powertrain combination for specific projects. When a customer selects a specific engine, the system automatically finds a Chevrolet-recommended transmission and specifies the required accessories that will be necessary for a proper installation. The new transmission will be also available to order from the new brand’s catalog.
