Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

TREMEC Introduces New 7-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission

TREMEC has recently presented its new dual-clutch transmission solution named TR-9070 DCT. The new product is notable for impressive operating characteristics with the maximum torque of 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) and extremely rapid gear shifting (less than 1/10 of a second).

No matter whether you are a common driver or a racer, this smart transmission will adjust to your driving style and ensure that you’ll have the best driving experience.

TR-9070 DCT

The primary goal of the TR-9070 design was to reduce its dimensions. For this purpose, all hydraulic elements, sensors and clutches are embedded into the gearbox. In addition, an efficient design solution also includes die-cast aluminum casing, a close-packed positioning of the gear cluster, hollow shafts, a durable, glass-filled polyamide 66 material sump pan, and more. The DCT is controlled with a high-performance, 32-bit TCU unit. This component is responsible for operation of all transmission elements, including the hydraulic unit, the 2 clutches, 8 gears, and the parking lock. All transmission components were designed and produced in-house to ensure the highest efficiency rate.

Thanks to the advanced dual-clutch twin system and its fully synchronized operation, the new transmission shifts gears with the ferocity of a race car. The clutch structure combines the advantages of wet and dry clutch solutions into a hybrid design. A high capacity wet clutch unit with optimized friction materials can cool down the clutches with the help of transmission fluid individually (only when it is required). As a result of this technical solution, there is a regulated heat impact and much lower dragging. To make sure that all transmission components will function correctly under all conditions, the TR-9070 DCT is ISO 26262 and ASIL-D compliant.

The new transmission embodies TREMEC’s vast experience in producing highly-efficient transmission solutions. This new product is the result of great financial and mental efforts. Fortunately, the end justified the means. In terms of design, the new TR-9070 DCT is a work of art which found application in Ford’s new Shelby Mustang GT500.
