Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

2022 Aston Martin Vanquish Gets a Manual Option

Fans of manual Aston Martin models are jubilant as the company’s chief executive Andy Palmer has confirmed in the recent interview that the carmaker will offer a manual transmission option for its 2022 Vanquish model.

This statement proves that Mr. Palmer remains true to his commitment not to give up a stick shift, even if the British automaker will remain the last one to offer manuals in the sports car segment. The head of Aston Martin is seriously determined to save a classic manual option, despite the fact that numerous carmakers have to drop manuals because of sinking demand on auto markets worldwide, especially in the USA.

2022 Aston Martin Vanquish at the Geneva motor show

Admirers of traditionally shifted sports cars are happy to know that at least one 3-pedal supercar will be available on the market in a few years. At the same time, it became known that the new Valhalla model won’t have a manual variant; according to Mr. Palmer the new Bond’s car will be shifted with the help of a paddle shifter.

If Palmer remains steadfast, then the manual Aston Martin can become a car of great rarity in the high-performance class, while other brands gradually shift to automatics. It is assumed that the Vanquish model will likely be equipped with the 7-speed manual gearbox built in-house by Aston Martin engineers. This unit has already found application in the V8 Vantage AMR which was presented in May. It is also interesting to point out that Aston Martin engineers used an aluminum tub in the Vanquish instead of the carbon tub applied for the Valhalla model. When the Vanquish hits the market in 2022, the price is expected to start at approximately $450,000. Variants to follow include the Volante soft-top model and the obligatory AMR model.

Aston Martin unveiled the Vanquish Vision concept at the latest motor show in Geneva to give some insights into the future Vanquish. The new Aston Martin sports car is expected to become the main competitor of the Ferrari F8 Tributo and McLaren 720S and won't have a limited volume of production like the Valhalla model.
