Allison Transmission Announces Global Availability of 9-speed transmission at IAA 2018

Recently, it has been reported that Allison Transmission will sell its new medium-duty, fully automatic 9-speed gearbox worldwide and that the company also designed an electric hybrid system with an extended range. The matter had come to light at the exhibition in Hanover, Germany.

Allison’s 9-speed gearbox is based on the well-known 2000 Series 6-speed gearboxes, which gained recognition all over the world. Both gearboxes have similar mounting dimensions, so the new 9-speed gearbox can be easily installed in vehicles currently equipped with the Allison 2000 Series.




With its deep 1-st gear ratio and highest ratio coverage, the 9-speed gearbox ensures substantial fuel economy as the implemented mechanism allows the torque converter to block early in 1-st gear. In addition, this gearbox may be equipped with the stop-start feature that guarantees instant gearbox activation and car hold while the engine is restarted. With a number of advantages, this gearbox will be a great option for delivery trucks and school buses.

Moreover, Allison also shared details of a new product in the field of electrification – an electric hybrid system. It is a perfect solution for urban and suburban buses, the system ensures lack of emission of harmful substances to the atmosphere while the engine is switched off, including the situations when the bus approaches a bus stop, stops and drives away. It means that the bus operates much quieter and causes much less pollution to the atmosphere.


Allison cooperates with providers of telematics services (TSPs) and carmakers to support existing and new clients, offering solutions for integrated and effective fleet management in the remote mode. Backwards-compatible to 4-th generation of gearbox control systems, which were firstly released in 2005, the new solutions on remote fleet control provide access to more than 170 gearbox operation parameters. This will provide fleet management and operational personnel with the information required to prolong service lifetime of the vehicles. Allison will start providing the info on state of gearboxes with the help of North American TSPs before the end of 2018. The company also plans to expand geographical scope applicability of this solution.
