Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Allison Transmission Solution is Chosen for Production of Armored Vehicles in Kazakhstan

Innovative armored motor cars produced by Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering (KPE) received Allison automatic gearboxes which ensure enhanced operating characteristics on rough terrain.

Allison 3000 Series

Requiring a solution that is easy-to-install and can operate under adverse weather and terrain conditions, KPE gave preference to the Allison Transmission 3000 Series for its latest armored vehicles. KPE currently works on production of 3 models: Arlan, Nomad, and Barys APC. These armored cars are fully mine-protected. The drivetrain components of these models include Cummins diesel engines paired with six-speed Allison fully automatic gearboxes.

According to KPE officials, the work on selection of the most appropriate drivetrain was launched more than a decade ago. Initially, the company’s specialists considered several gearbox solutions provided by well-known companies. All transmissions were exposed to severe testing in real-life conditions.

During testing, KPE engineers took into consideration several factors:

  • Functionality and speed of installation which affects the cost (as well as speed) of manufacturing and servicing of the cars.
  • Gearbox weight. Military vehicles are quite heavy themselves. Therefore, KPE engineers tried to find more compact, but still powerful enough, solution to decrease the total weight of the vehicle.
  • Changeable weather conditions. The weather in Kazakhstan is notable for very hot summers (up to +50 °C) and extremely cold winters (down to -50 °C), therefore the required transmission solution needed enhanced cooling system.

After numerous tests, KPE officials came to conclusion that the gearbox provided by Allison meets all the requirements mentioned above. Enhanced off-road operating characteristics of the 3000 series gearbox proved to be an efficient solution for mountainous and sandy areas.

Even inexperienced drivers easily drive armored vehicles equipped with Allison gearbox thanks to its ease of operation. Allison automatics ensure an exceptional ease of handling, maneuverability and rapid speed-ups by smoothly multiplying engine torque and transmitting more power to the wheels. The driver can pay more attention to the road without bothering about the process of gear shifting, which is crucial during military operations.

The Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan, the major customer of these vehicles, also praises the new armored vehicles thanks to their durability, efficiency and usability. It is interesting to note that transmission solutions of Allison Transmission found application in numerous military vehicles. Recently, the company has celebrated 100 Years of Service to U.S. Army.
