Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Bell Exclusively Selects Allison for its Vehicles

Allison Transmission has announced about strengthening of cooperation with Bell Equipment, a major manufacturer of in the off-highway trucks and related construction equipment based in South Africa. Bell has already been using Allison’s 4800 ORS for its massive articulated dump trucks (ADT), and the American transmission supplier has agreed on delivery of its 3400ORS units for Bell’s B30E trucks. Moreover, both parties have reached an agreement on prolongation of the partnership agreement that makes Allison the main supplier of gearbox solutions for the South American company during the next 5 years.

Allison 4800 ORS

According to the Allison representative, the world-known transmission supplier greatly appreciates the trust placed in it by Bell Equipment officials and is ready to provide top-quality gearboxes for all Bell artic trucks. Allison’s heavy-duty transmissions (2000/3000/4000 Series) found application in Bell trucks, as their reliability and robustness fit right with extreme operating conditions. Both companies have been doing business for more than four decades. Initially, Bell used American automatics for its hauling tractors. Now Allison’s transmissions became a standard option for a wide range of Bell’s trucks and tractors.

Bell’s customers come from different industrial sectors (from mining to construction and agriculture), but all of them share one view – Allison’s products play a major role in providing comfortable and fuel efficient operation of Bell vehicles. These sophisticated units facilitate to substantial reductions in operational costs and easy maintenance.

The 3400ORS unit, applied in Bell’s 30-ton heavy truck, is designed to provide high quality of operation even in the most challenging conditions. This gearbox has a special xFE (extra fuel efficiency) gear ratio set. Moreover, thanks to its sophisticated design, this transmission can operate with the converter lock-up clutch being engaged for a longer period of time, thereby allowing to drive in higher ranges at lower RPM rates - ensuring better fuel economy. Trucks equipped with Allison solutions can speed up more rapidly and run at higher average speeds, thus becoming a key performance booster for users of Bell trucks. Enhanced hp rates and a special Allison’s torque converter allow Bell trucks to successfully transport heavy loads.
