Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

BorgWarner Plans to Supply AWD Couplings for Geely's Lynk & Co 01

Recently, it has transpired that BorgWarner plans to provide its top-of-the-line electro-hydraulically driven AWD coupling for Geely's Lynk & Co's first model, the 01. As a startup automobile business owned by Geely Auto, Lynk & Co tends to use advanced manufacturing technologies and selling strategies.

Thanks to implemented car dynamics program, the AWD coupling is a space-saving, low-weight unit that transfers torque between the forward and back axle automatically, ensuring that the 01 SUV model has greater torque capacity for greater fuel efficiency and increased stability, traction and vehicle steerability. Due to growing call for BW’s AWD solutions in China, the company has been gradually building up the presence of the company on the fast-growing Chinese market since 2015. Therefore, collaboration with Geely’s subsidiary is another step for boosting business ties with Chinese businesses.

The abovementioned SUV model is based on the space-saving Modular design developed thanks to joint efforts of engineers from Volvo and Geely. Based on particular on-road parameters, BW adjusted its AWD coupling solution to meet the new model specifications. The electronically driven multi-disc coupling applies data such as car speed and curve radius to transfer torque between the forward and back axle without human input. Working regardless of the differential speed between the 2 axles, the AWD coupling is able to provide full locking torque when the car moves under any speed conditions, taking into account state of road surface and car load balancing. For car owners, it implies a well-balanced torque control at all stages of riding.

BW officials claim that the coupling's low weight, highly-efficient structure guarantees simple interoperability with the power unit, while its enhanced operation speed, torque density and precision considerably improve car behavior and tyres grip on the road.
