BorgWarner Supplies P2 Hybrid Solutions for ChangAn’s New Transmission
Recently, it became known that BorgWarner (BW)
has officially taken on the obligation to provide its cutting-edge
triple-clutch P2 drive module and electro-hydraulic control unit to ChangAn
Automobile, a major Chinese supplier of auto parts, within the terms of the
recently signed agreement. It is expected that both elements will find
application in the new hybrid transmission produced by the Chinese company. BW
plans to reach the required level of the P2 module production for its Chinese
partner in 2020.
This deal seems to be not accidental, as the new public standard on CO2 emissions is planned to be officially put into action in 2020, but many local authorities started adopting the new standard this summer to reduce negative environmental impacts. This, in combination with more severe fuel consumption rules, has become a big problem for many OEMs. As the standard solutions do not allow OEMs to comply with the latest emission rules, sophisticated hybrids have become a true asset for OEM companies. According to BW, the new partnership allows the company to strengthen its positions in the international HEV market. BW is eager to offering advanced solutions to its customers and creating sophisticated gear shifting mechanisms at the advent of the automotive electrification.
Learn more about BW’s P2 technology
By positioning the e-motor between the IC-engine and the gear shifting unit, BW’s on-axis P2 drive module guarantees less expensive hybridization thanks to the fact that it can be adopted in currently available vehicle platforms. The advanced P2 unit implies the opportunity of embedding up to 3 clutches, including a decoupling clutch, which allows the system to disconnect from the engine for 100% e-driving, allowing customers to accomplish both their personal fuel-efficiency and operating capacity objectives. BW’s P2 solution can be provided for the off-axis variant. This engineering solution places the e-motor parallel to the primary axis and connects the system via one of the company’s durable chain technologies, thereby guaranteeing max torque transmission.
BW’s P2 drive modules give manufacturers the freedom of placing the e-motor in different under-the-hood configurations. By utilizing BW’s S-wind wire-forming process to design the motor, the P2 drive module offers high power and torque densities in a very limited package-size. The cutting-edge production process allows BW to manufacture smaller and at the same time more powerful HV e-motors on a large scale, contributing to the use of environmentally-friendly technologies in the automotive industry. Moreover, contrary to other off-axis P2 systems that apply a belt to connect the system, BW’s product ensures enhanced performance capacity thanks to connecting the P2 via its highly-reliable chain drive technologies. Moreover, it should be noted that the BW’s product includes such a lot of helpful additional features.
