Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Chrysler Recalls 2014 Jeep Cherokee Because of Transmission Issues

Chrysler has recently issued a recall of its 2014 Jeep Cherokee SUVs because of the transmission issue, namely it can spontaneously shift into neutral. According to company’s officials, the problem occurs in the transmission software, if the clutch gets locked in the transmission unit.

The recall list will include 91,650 Cherokees to fix the pr Jeep Cherokee

oblem. The issue can be solved by updating the transmission software. Chrysler initiated an internal investigation this spring, when company’s engineers informed Chrysler top management about the transmission issue. To be more precise, engineers detected that a blocked valve in the valve body can avert clutch disengagement and lead to the abovementioned malfunction. Due to this problem, the car can abruptly lose the ability to continue moving forward no matter what’s the car speed.

The company has reported that there is no info about any crashes or injuries related to the issue specified in the recall documents, but numerous field reports and more than 3,000 warranty claims have been received. The recall will include more than 80 thousand cars in the US and more than 10 thousand SUVs in Canada. The recalled Cherokees were manufactured in Toledo between February 27, 2013, and July 11, 2014. The recall is planned to be started next month.

It is interesting to point out that transmission issues come as not a big surprise for this model equipped with the 9-speed ZF transmission. The thing is that this model was included in much bigger recall 3 years ago because of ZF transmission issues. It is said that even the official release of this model was postponed several times because FCA engineers had problems with the transmission calibration.

Moreover, not long ago the company had to recall more than 300,000 Dodge Dart cars in North America because of a transmission issue that can lead to gear shifting failures, namely the shifting cable breakdown.
