Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Cottingham Engineering Expands its Range of Services

Hydra-Test valve body testing units have been widely used by transmission repair specialists worldwide for more than two decades. Thanks to high quality of Cottingham Engineering products, the early models are still widely used by automatic transmission repair experts. However, car transmission technologies are developing at a growing rate and should be serviced with the help of more advanced and efficient diagnostic and repair equipment. Therefore, Cottingham Engineering specialists came up with the idea to refurbish old valve body testing machines (first of all, those running on VBDaq and E-ZEE Shift) for company’s customers or simply to buy unused Hydratest machines and find an appropriate application for them.

A valve body is one of the most important components of automatic transmissions. It is responsible for redistribution of ATF flow and its pressure rates. The valve body is also considered to be one of the most complicated elements of the automatic transmission. And, in fact, it is so, since the valve body design includes a metal valve plate with numerous channels (with installed control valves), different springs and plungers, sets of sensors and solenoids responsible for proper operation of the gearbox.

Problems with the valve body may lead to serious repair of the whole transmission unit. Issues with this element may be caused by different reasons. Vacuum testing equipment will help to reveal major problems within the valve body, but more subtle problems are likely to remain unrevealed.

That is why the diagnostics and repair of valve bodies must be performed by professional specialists who have the required skills and experience. In addition, workshops require special advanced equipment, which will help to perform different tests and accurately detect even the slightest deviations from standard operational characteristics of the valve body. Therefore, Cottingham Engineering offers to its customers (professional transmission rebuilders) the opportunity to refurbish their old Hydra-test machinery, so it will be upgraded to match the capacity of HT-VBT DELUXE, the flagship machine of Cottingham Engineering which allows gearbox rebuilders to execute quality testing of the most in-demand modern valve body units and individual solenoids, whilst solutions for older valve body makes are provided too.

HT-VBT Deluxe valve body testing unit

In comparison to older valve body testing solution, HT-VBT Deluxe is equipped with HTC-K Controller and, obviously, fully digital interface. The Deluxe unit was developed with an improved control over heating element and dual monitor so it can withstand extensive temperatures in the process of testing. It also has enhanced pressurizing pump capacity.

Thanks to introduction of HTC-K Controller, the Deluxe model provides advanced methods of PMW solenoid testing and higher frequency of data capture (500 Hz). The process of the Controller operation is notable for its user-friendliness (as well as ease of software update).

Summarizing the above, today Cottingham Engineering offers 3 new service options:

  • Trade-in deal, i.e. when buying HT-VBT Deluxe customers can trade in older Hydra-test machinery to get an amount off the deal price.
  • Upgrade of any older Hydra-Test valve body testing machines to a high standard by the team of professionals at the company’s facility in Kettering, England.
  • Sale of any unused Hydra-Test equipment, so it can be refurbished and put to good use somewhere in the world.
