Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

FCA Models Receive ZF’s Transmission Solution

ZF, a major provider of powertrain solutions and related parts, has recently reported that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) had selected the company as its global supplier of transmission solutions for RWD and AWD cars. It is said that ZF will offer its latest 8-speed automatic transmission for FCA, which also turns out to be the 2-nd biggest deal in the ZF's history.

ZF claims that the cutting-edge modification of the 8-speed unit has been structurally enhanced and its design now includes an embedded e-drive for HVs. According to ZF officials, the company is proud to be chosen by FCA as a gearbox supplier worldwide. Thanks to this major deal ZF takes another step forward in implementation of its strategy to design more efficient and more environmentally-friendly gear shifting units. The main manufacturing plant for the new-gen transmissions will launch large-scale production in 2022 in Germany. In the coming years, ZF also considers a possibility of launching the production of this innovative gear shifting solution at manufacturing sites in other countries.

ZF’s 8HP automatic transmission

The new 8-speed unit can find application in a wide range of vehicles. The modified version of this solution is notable for presence of the e-drive in its design. It is assumed that this feature will help automakers to comply with more and more stringent emission regulations. The modular design used by ZF engineers in this product gives automakers a great chance to adjust this flexible unit to their needs and timely react to market changes.

Despite the fact that the 8HP unit is quite new to the market, this sophisticated unit has already drawn attention of major automakers. Not long ago, ZF signed the biggest contract in its history with BMW for the supply of its latest 8HP modification for the German car manufacturer.
