Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

First Ferrari's Hybrid Vehicle Gets an Innovative Transmission from Magna

Magna has designed and provides a cutting-edge dual-clutch (DCT) 8-speed transmission (named as 8DCL900) for the SF90 Stradale model - Ferrari’s 1-st plug-in hybrid sports car ever – with the purpose of ensuring better torque and gear shifting capacity.

This sophisticated unit features enabling innovations, such as the cellular casing structure, which is supposed to cut cars’ weight by approximately 10 kg and enhance its performance characteristics. The transmission will also make it possible to decrease the level of harmful emissions. This DCT brings the gear shifting technology to a new level for sports cars.

The new product has all key characteristics required for first-class maneuvering qualities in city traffic and on racing tracks. The team of Magna engineers took advantage of their solid experience and knowledge related to the development of driveline components.

Magna’s solutions give automakers an opportunity to achieve their goals by matching state-of-the-art technologies with the latest engineering and production methods. Solutions such as the Stradale transmission become a perfect addition to the company’s range of innovative transmission units, as many concepts can be improved and integrated in other vehicle categories.

At the same time, Magna also makes significant investments in expansion of its activities via partnerships and establishment of work centers. In the first half of this year, the company has entered into partnership for a EV production with a division of BAIC. This summer, the company also opened a production plant in Michigan, which is aimed to strengthen its presence in the region. Moreover, Magna plans to take over Wipac Czech s.r.o., in order to reinforce its engineering capacities worldwide.
