Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Ford Recalls F-150 for Transmission Issue Again

Ford has recently announced the recall of 107,850 F-150 trucks aiming to solve the issue with defective software that was installed as a possible solution during the previous recall of this model. According to the carmaker, that measure was intended to fix transmissions that could independently shift into 1-st gear, but unfortunately the issue was not fully eliminated.

Depending on the travelling speed, automaker representatives say, an unexpected gear shifting into 1-st gear without a prior signal may lead to the loss of truck control, creating conditions for road traffic accidents. It is claimed that the current recall list includes only 2013 F-150 trucks equipped with a 5-liter (or 6.2 liter) engine paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The software applied in the previous recall did not have the updates required to rule out gear shifting issues described above, or at least to ensure that a signal light would illuminate if there was an issue. Ford officials claim that they do not have any data related to car accidents or injuries caused by inaccurate gear shifting. To fix the issue, dealers plan to update the software absolutely free-of-charge.

Since the beginning of this year, Ford has already issued 4 car recalls (including this one) caused by transmission issues, including a major recall of approx. 1.48 million F-150 trucks in North America. At the same time, it is worth mentioning that Ford also plans several other recalls related to issues with different car components. The biggest of them includes more than 1.2 million Explorer SUVs (2011-2017). It is said that the automaker will have to spend approximately $180 million to cover expenses for this huge recall.
