Ford Recalls Fusion and Ranger Models Due to Transmission Issues
Recently, it became known that Ford Motor Co
plans to recall nearly 273,000 Ford Fusion and Ranger models in North America to
deal with a gear shifting issue that may lead to unpredictable roll-away
accidents.

The list of recalled cars will include 270,000 Fusion models (2013-2016) which have a gear shifting cable that might get disconnected from the gearbox, making it possible for a driver to take out the start key when the P gear still is not engaged. This staggering number is added by 2,800 of recently released Ford Ranger with a very much the same problem.

According to the carmaker officials, the bushing pairing the gear shifting cable with the car’s gearbox can come off, resulting in “unintentional car running.” Currently, the company has the information about 3 cases of property damage accidents and 1 injury probably associated with the transmission problem in Fusions. At the same time, Ford has no info about similar accidents in Ranger vehicles. Ford also asked the owners of cars included in the recall list to have caution and always apply the parking brake when stopping the car. Currently, the company is working on the solution for the problem, and will inform car owners when a solution is available in the Fusion recall.
As for the Ranger recall, the automaker assumed that 2 connectors that secure the gear shift cable connection to the transmission casing might not have been tightened properly. To solve this issue, it will be necessary to ensure sufficient tightness of the fasteners and check the operability of the gearbox selector assembly. Last year Ford had to recall more than half a million Fusions and Escape models because of the same issue, though triggered by a different reason. Ford pointed out that cars fixed in the previous recall are not included in the current one.
