Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

After a short period of time on the market, Ford issues a safety compliance recall for the new light-duty to check the shifter interlock override feature implemented in the gearbox. The recall list includes 3500 Ranger trucks in the US and Canada. All defected models were manufactured at the Michigan production facility in Dearborn in 2018-2019.

The abovementioned feature is intended to keep the car from unwanted movement, blocking the gearbox when the P gear is engaged. As a result, to keep the car moving the driver has to press the brake pedal to engage R, N, or D gears. According to Ford representatives, the affected trucks may have defective PRNDL bezel wiring that can have a negative impact on the interlock.

The automaker claims that there are no known road accidents or injuries caused by the problem and the company puts in great efforts to fix the problem. Owners of affected cars have to visit their Ford dealer where technicians will test troublesome component and, if required, repair or change the defective part to make sure that the unit operates properly.

Having a recall so early after the model release may reflect poorly on the sales level. Luckily for the company, it seems like the issue was detected quite early and serious financial loses will be avoided.
