It is likely that the problem is caused by the software malfunction, more precisely the clutch software installed in the TCM. According to official data, more than 14 thousand MX-5 Miatas equipped with automatic gearboxes may be exposed to electrical interference when the D gear is engaged, resulting in unpredictable downshifting. Mazda has not registered any car crashes or injuries related to the problem.
According to Mazda representatives, the company
will inform the owners of defected cars by March 29, 2019. Dealers will update
the gearbox software absolutely free-of-charge.
1 millionth MX-5
It is interesting to note that the 4-th generation Miata received numerous awards, including Euro NCAP award as the best model in its class. Nineteen years ago, the Guinness Book of World Records named the MX-5 the most saleable 2-seat sports car of all time, with a total output of 531,890 cars. In 2016, Mazda surpassed its record by manufacturing its 1,000,000’s MX-5.
