Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

New Actuator Solutions from Schaeffler

New Actuator Solutions from Schaeffler

At the 18th International VDI Congress “Drivetrain for Vehicles”, Schaeffler is showcasing its products for IC-engine, hybrid, and electrified powertrains, which will give a new impulse to further development of automobile technologies corresponding to current environmental standards.

Energy efficiency is crucial to the R&D of eco-friendly vehicles of tomorrow, but how can all the elements in the powertrain use their potential and capacity to the maximum extent with regard to energy? Schaeffler came up with new solutions for this challenging task. This year, the main topic of the abovementioned event is related to advanced actuator technologies, involving the actuator for multi-speed electric axles (EAA) and the integrated parking lock actuator (PLA). With its know-how ideas, Schaeffler has a significant bearing on developmental trends which may find application in car technologies. By applying its accumulated experience in the field of powertrains solutions manufacturing, the company can comply with high-level requirements of potential clients and can design energy-saving and economically viable concepts for different types of electrically driven powertrains.

Schaeffler’s electric axle actuator (EAA)

Schaeffler’s electric axle actuator (EAA) will be launched into large-scale manufacturing in 2018. The EAA is designed on the basis of the interlock gearbox actuator with built-in lock-up, but operates without a selector axis. The main peculiarity lies in the fact that 2 adjustment motors are regulated only during gearshift operations. Apart from a minimal no-load current, this actuator is notable for lack of energy waste. Schaeffler put great efforts not only in development of the equipment, but also works on the software to guarantee desirable operational characteristics of the complete unit.

Schaeffler’s parking lock actuator (PLA)

Schaeffler’s PLA was designed as an effective activation unit for the parking lock feature in e-cars. This product has a light weight and a space-saving design. Thus, it can be embedded into electric axle units or hybrid gearboxes in the most appropriate way. The constructive simplicity of the parking lock mechanical system in the gearbox also provides prolonged useful life of more than 150 thousand load cycles per unit.
