Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Next Kia Soul Gets IVT Transmission

Kia has recently informed that the Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT), which firstly was applied in the 2019 Forte, will be installed on the new 2020 Soul model.

Check out the new Kia Soul

Taking all significant features of previous models that gained popularity and recognition among Kia customers, Kia engineers managed to bring in more innovative technologies in the latest Soul model. Particular attention should be paid to different drivetrain combinations implemented in this vehicle. There are 2 engine options for the new Soul model: 2.0L MPI Engine and 1.6L Turbo Engine. To handle the power of the torque from the engines, Kia offers 3 types of transmissions:

  • 6-speed manual gearbox
  • Dual-clutch gearbox
  • IVT

Learn more about 2020 Kia Soul

If most drivers are familiar with manual and dual-clutch options, the same cannot be said about the IVT. So, let us have a closer look at this peculiar gearbox technology. The IVT, after being successfully integrated in the 2019 Forte, is now selected by Kia for installs in the 2020 Soul. Developed and produced in-house, the IVT is Kia’s version of a CVT solution that ensures an unforgettable driving experience.

The IVT gearbox has the following advantages:

  • Many carmakers use CVTs equipped with a push belt. Kia, in turn, came up with the idea to use a chain in the IVT. This solution increases durability of the gearbox and creates a more natural feel of shifting;
  • Many drivers do not like CVTs because they shift unnaturally. The IVT gives drivers more satisfaction from driving, because it simulates the shifting operation of a standard automatic gearbox;
  • The transmission case of the IVT is also equipped with the noise-insulating cover, which made it possible to reduce the noise level by 5 dB;
  • The IVT solution has benefits of not only standard automatics, but also the main advantage of CVTs, namely, fuel efficiency.
