Schaeffler Provides Hybrid Transmission for Ford SUVs
Schaeffler, a German manufacturer of auto parts,
plans to supply its hybrid transmission unit for the 2020 Ford Explorer and
Police Interceptor Utility, as well as the 2020 Lincoln Aviator. As a part of
Schaeffler’s electrification strategy implementation, this transmission
solution contributes to hybridization of the SUVs, trucks and off-roaders,
while also ensuring more power and torque.
Produced at Schaeffler’s recently expanded
E-Mobility production facility, the hybrid gear shifting solution has several
modes of operation. This unit offers the following advantages: reduced fuel
consumption; lack of local emissions; instant speed-up capacity; integrated
generator; embedded torque converter unit; and enhanced towing ability.
Explorer Limited Hybrid equipped with a powerful engine and the hybrid gearbox is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds—the same as a properly equipped 2019 Explorer with powerful EcoBoost engine. This model comes with a purposely developed liquid-cooled Li-ion battery. The totally new Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid (PIUH) is known for a 41% enhancement in fuel economy when compared to the currently used police vehicle equipped with a standard 3.7-liter gas engine. In result, it is supposed to save taxpayers several thousand dollars per vehicle in fuel costs every year. During test drives, the all-new PIUH showed faster speed-up and maximum speed rates when compared to other police utility vehicles. The hybrid variant of Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring has under its hood a twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 engine and 75 kW e-motor, which ensure 494 hp and 854 Nm of torque.
