Situation Around To-Be-Closed GM Plants Stays Unclear
The situation around GM plans to close several plants, including 2 transmission plants, brings up more questions than answers. Recently, it has transpired that the United Auto Workers is filing a lawsuit against GM because of the carmaker's intentions to shut down 3 U.S. plants before expiration of the existing employment agreement.
The union is determined to stand up for the
rights of plants involved in the suit to continue to work at least until the
existing agreement between the UAW and GM expires in early Autumn. GM, in turn,
wants to close the plants in the near future.
It should be reminded that at the end of November 2018 GM reported its plan to close 5 production facilities in North America and put out of work approximately 14 thousand specialists by the end of 2019. This restructuring measure was caused by rising costs and slower car sales. However, this step caused dissatisfaction among public officials, including the US president.
That’s how it all
started…..
The list of affected plants includes gearbox
manufacturing facilities in Warren (Michigan) and in Baltimore. The Baltimore
plant, producing of Allison 1000 gearboxes for GM trucks, should be closed by
April 1, 2019. Unless GM is ready to purchase the gearboxes directly from
Allison or open a new production facility, it could mean that a new gearbox
will be installed on T1 2500/3500 trucks.
Warren Transmission is supposed to stay in
operation until
