Subaru Moves One Step Closer to Dropping the Manual Transmission
Subaru has recently unveiled its new prices and
trim level modifications for the 2020 Impreza. It seems like not all admirers
of classic manually-shifted Subaru models will be happy with the latest news
from the automaker, as it is said that Subaru plans to reduce the number of
manual Subaru models available for the 2020 line-up.
The sedan version of the Impreza Sport trim will be equipped with a CVT. Thus, the hatch version is the only trim above the base model to offer a 5-speed manual.
Now it becomes absolutely clear that Subaru
gradually excludes manual transmissions from its future cars, as the company
shifts to its new global platform. In addition to technical superiority of
modern automatic transmissions over manuals and general automation trend, it is
necessary to point out that the development of a new manual gearbox under
current market conditions turns out to be economically unviable. Customers’
demand for manual models has significantly slumped in recent years. Moreover,
classic manual transmission units cannot be adjusted to e-powertrains of the
future and impede integration of Subaru’s EyeSight safety solution.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Outback,
Forester and Legacy have already said good bye to manuals. Even the base WRX is
to be equipped with CVT-only when the next Gen line-up will hit the market.
This trend is no longer something unusual for the automotive industry, as BMW has
been struggling a lot to keep a stick shift option for its M3 model.
Expects say that fans of manual Subaru have to put up with the fact that conventional passenger cars will soon be 100% automatic. It seems like the company will limit the use of manual transmissions to niche sports cars (WRX STI and BRZ) and budget models (base-model Impreza) where this option helps to reduce lowers the car’s starting retail price.
