According to numerous rumors in the automobile media, Toyota still considers adding a manual transmission option for its latest Supra model. When the long-awaited Supra model hit the market in early 2019, its powertrain specification included only an 8-speed automatic transmission to the surprise of numerous sports car fans. From their perspective, it is hard to imagine a real sports, to which Supra undoubtedly belongs, without a gear stick option.

But recent media reports give hope to admirers of manual models, as they say that Toyota may change its mind and add a manual option for Supra. All these rumors were fueled by the recent BMW report saying that the Z4 sDrive 20i will come with a 6-speed manual as standard. Taking into account that Supra and Z4 are very similar in terms of design, thus there is a chance that the same manual solution will easily find application in the Supra model.


In order to clarify the situation on this matter, media reporters asked Toyota representatives straight about the prospects of a manual option for the Supra model, but, unfortunately, they did not receive a clear response. So far, the Japanese automaker wants to see how the automatic Supra will progress on the American market, but at the same time Toyota is aware of a strong public interest in the manual option for Supra and leaves the question open.

Despite a genuine interest in the possibility of a manual Supra from sports car enthusiasts, it is absolutely clear that Toyota won’t turn a blind eye on current sales of manual sports cars, if it will come to the discussion on prospects of the manual Supra. In such a case, it is very unlikely that Toyota will take risks with a manual option for Supra, as only 2% of Toyota’s own sales statistics account for manual models, but who knows what clever tricks there are on the minds o f Toyota officials…..
