Transmission Problem Causes Sales Suspension for Specific BMW Models
Due to some issues with the transmission wiring
harness on specific M models, BMW has come up with a decision to suspend the
sale of affected models and to initiate their recall. The German car
manufacturer has already informed the NHTSA on the situation, but the
organization hasn’t made any official statements. All the models included in
the recall list are M cars equipped with their corresponding versions of BMW’s
4.4-liter engine and the ZF 8HP unit.

According to the automaker, the issue stems
from the fact that the gearbox wire harness could get broken due to its
positioning and routing, causing a short-circuit failure impacting the operability
of the gearbox. Sometimes, this issue causes the loss of propulsion and switch
to N gear while running, increasing the possibility of a car accident. BMW
dealer centers received instructions to examine the wire harness, replace, and
reroute it absolutely free-of-charge. The repair procedure is estimated to take
about 1 hour.
In February next year, BMW will notify all owners of the affected cars on the required services and to arrange an appointment with their local dealers. Currently, the automaker works on guaranteeing that the required fixes are available before car owners receive notifications. All recalled cars left the production line this year (between Jan 30 and Nov 27). This period of production includes almost every M car manufactured this year, thus it will be next to impossible to find one currently available for purchase at BMW dealerships.
All potential customers, considering the purchase of M models, have to possess plenty of patience. Until the repair completion, BMW is not going to sell any of the recalled models. Since the transmission fixes are scheduled to start next year, none of these cars will be on sale until then.
