VW Recalls 80,000 Over DSG Transmission Issues
VW AUSTRALIA has recently announced a recall of
63,000 VW, 14,000 Audi, and 4500 Skoda models produced between 2009-2015 to
take measures against possible DSG unit issues.
Dual-clutch gearboxes, known as "DSG", can be subjected to "an interruption of power" before going into a low-speed emergency mode. According to VW representatives, when the car equipped with a defective transmission pulls over, the car cannot start moving again without the help of an experienced troubleshooter. It is claimed that the recall has been issued because of a possible manufacturing defect, which can lead to a crack in the transmissions pressure accumulator.
If the pressure accumulator breaks, there comes a pressure loss in the hydraulic mechanism of the gearbox. Afterwards, the process of torque transfer via the transmission unit is interrupted. This issue is similar to depressing the clutch in a car equipped with a gear stick. It may increase the possibility of a traffic accident. VW Australia officials say VW decided to take additional steps to ensure customers’ safety. It is said that the affected brands will contact owners of the to-be-recalled vehicles to organize an examination and repair of out-of-operation elements if necessary. All models in the recall are listed in the table below.
VW claims that the new recall has nothing to do with the 2013 recall to examine gear shifting mechanisms in almost 26,000 cars produced during 2008-13 that related to the transmission control unit issues, but that “some cars involved then may also be recalled now”.
