Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

ZF Exhibits Its Latest Transmission Solution at MIMS Automechanika Moscow 2019

ZF looks forward to participating in the international repair industry exhibition MIMS Automechanika 2019, which will be held from 26 to 29 August 2019 in Moscow. This event is the largest trade show of automobile spare parts, car elements, equipment and vehicle servicing products in Russia and Eastern Europe. This year, ZF, a major provider of powertrain solutions and related parts, will exhibit a number of new solutions for hybrid and electric cars.

ZF’s 8HP automatic transmission

One of the main products at the manufacturer’s booth will be the latest ZF’s 8-speed transmission for hybrid applications. All elements of the hybrid drive are integrated in the transmission, which can be embedded in the available mounting space of the vehicle. The built-in e-motor with a capacity of 20 kW allows increasing the speed of movement on electric traction up to 100 km/h. In addition, the hybrid system makes it possible to reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%. It is interesting to point out that ZF has already received a lot of attention from carmakers, which resulted into 2 large orders from BMW and FCA.

Under the brand name SACHS, ZF will show visitors the dual-mass flywheel for hybrid cars, the CDC shock absorption system with electronic stiffness control and the ConAct electro-pneumatic clutch for CVs. Among the new developments in the field of e-cars, ZF Aftermarket will exhibit the TRW brake pads of the Electric Blue Series. According to the manufacturer, almost all electric cars in the EU (approximately 97%), including Tesla and Nissan cars, are equipped with such pads.
