Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

ZF Receives New Order from Daimler

ZF has recently announced the 3-rd major order within few weeks. The company will provide major powertrain elements for Daimler’s new electric SUV, the Mercedes EQC. Earlier, ZF closed two major deals with BMW and FCA on supply of its latest 8HP transmission.

Wolf-Henning Scheider, ZF CEO

This information was received from ZF’s CEO Wolf-Henning Scheider during the latest interview to one of the German newspapers. Mr. Scheider pointed out the fact that the deal with Daimler is an important event in the field of E-mobility, but he did not reveal any specific figures related to the deal.

However, it is known that ZF will deliver the whole driveline module for the EQC model, from e-motors to single-gear gearboxes with differentials, as well as the control software. All elements will be produced at the ZF facility in Germany (Schweinfurt). The plant was recently expanded by ZF to include a new, building equipped with advanced testing facilities.

Mr. Scheider also pointed out the company’s commitment to promotion of E-mobility, paying special attention to development of PHEV vehicles. It is expected that investments in this field will significantly increase in the coming years. Many analysts assume that this interest to hybrid cars from ZF is motivated by the company’s urge to promote its latest hybrid transmission 8HP among automakers. In response to criticism, Mr. Scheider said that the company is equally supportive of hybrid and electric vehicles, and pointed out that hybrids will have a significant share on the auto market over the next 10 years.

ZF puts in great efforts to promote environmentally-friendly technologies and to reduce CO2 emissions, as major automakers struggle to comply with more severe environment safety rules. The company sees hybrid and electric vehicles as a great answer to current ecological challenges. Thus, ZF will do its best to make hybrids and e-cars more popular among drivers. Mr. Scheider also said that this year ZF’s development expenditures can set a new record.
