It seems that scandalous newspaper headlines related to the ill-fated Powershift (DPS6) transmission are not going to stop haunting Ford in the near future. Moreover, several Ford ex-workers recently confirmed that the defectiveness of this transmission was not a big secret even during a testing stage of this unit. And now a new story hit the headlines.
Recently, several former and current Ford tech specialists have told the media that "everyone knew" about the faulty automatic transmissions in the Fiesta and Focus models. It is claimed that despite the fact that the issue was not a big secret before the cars hit the market, the company recommended its employees not to go public about this problem.
The Powershift transmission case settlement that was challenged in court has been for reexamination after the appellate court detected significant contradictions with the package deal being "just" and "appropriate" for consumers. Currently, the lawsuit is at the state of the case revision.
Not long ago, Ford took on the obligation on the warranty extension on the problematic Powershift installed in thousands of Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta models. Notifications for owners of affected cars have not been sent out so far, but the American Auto Giant has established a specific timeline for owners to be notified about their transmission warranty extensions, namely after Labor Day (on 2 September).
In recent months, issues with the Powershift DCT transmission in Ford’s Fiesta and Focus models have become a front-page news of automotive magazines and this scandal has gained a snowball effect on the American Auto Giant. To address the problem, Ford has announced the clutch warranty extension on the affected models by 2 years or 40 thousand miles, to a total of 7 years or 100 thousand miles.
Michelle Hughes, one of thousands of unlucky owners of Ford Fiesta equipped with a defective Powershift transmission, was visited by two Ford technicians who wanted to check her car and provide free-of-charge repair services if needed. At first sight, it seemed absolutely normal, but later it emerged that one of the technicians was Ford’s top manager who for some reason didn’t use his real name and position in the company during the meeting with Ms. Hughes.
According to the Ford’s secret memo obtained by news media, the automaker instructed its American dealership centers to fix ill-fated Powershift transmissions installed in popular budget models Focus and Fiesta, if owners of cars produced during 2011-2017 lodge transmission-related complaints. In should be noted that many of these cars have expired transmission warranties.
