Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

TCI’s Transmission Controller Gives More Opportunities to Automotive Tuners

Enhanced customization capability is one of the main advantages of modern cars that are computer-operated, but what should be done when the computer’s ability reaches its limits? When we are talking about gear shifting characteristics of modern cars, it is recommended to consider the TCU 2.0 Transmission Controller provided by TCI. This solution gives a user 100% transmission operation.

The main objective of TCI engineers was to design a flexible controller, which could be set up with the help of a notebook computer and would provide professional tuners an efficient solution to work with a wide range of automatic transmissions. The controller makes you in charge of all operational characteristics of the gear shifting unit, so it can be easily adjusted to work with a variety of applications and hp rates.

Dave Henninger, the representative of TCI, said that the company wanted to hit the market with highly efficient and reliable controller. This solution is intended for well-known GM and Ford gearboxes. But thanks to all advanced features implemented in this unit, it can be adjusted for application in automatics. What distinguishes the TCU 2.0 from its standard analogs is its software efficiency. TCI engineers wanted to guarantee compatibility of this unit with a wide range of gearboxes and platforms.

Mr. Henninger claims that the software will tune the whole system to meet even the most specific requirements. There are several speed inputs and outputs that can be adjusted in various manners. For instance, if you have any particular solenoid outputs you can set them to operate as needed. The control operates on the basis of CAN Bus protocol, so it is compatible with a wide range of devices besides FAST XFI. The new controller is able to operate with practically any hp level application. With the help of this solution, tuning professionals get access to the TC lockup mechanism. Thus, it is possible to lock the gearbox up in various gears and even lock up between shifts as well.

The controller from TCI gives tuning specialists a large room for maneuver when it comes to gear shifting, allowing them to experiment a lot with the transmission performance. A stock ECU only allows you to change specific parameters and places restrictions on the extent of these changes. With the TCU 2.0, you can separate the controls from the ECU and take matters into your own hands.
