ATX is a 3-speed automatic transmission manufactured by Ford within the period from 1981 until 1994. It was Ford's 1-st automatic gearbox designed for FWD and cross-mounted engine. The structural design of this transmission is not complicated, but very reliable. This gearbox has a lockup torque converter, but no overdrive gear.

Technical issues and repair guidelines

ATX was mainly installed in Ford Taurus and Ford Escort models. This fully hydraulic transmission is rarely met in repair services. However, owners of ATX may have problems with gear shifting if the engine is not warmed up. But transmission repair specialists say that the reason of this issue lies in wear-out of plastic gears, which can be replaced without dismounting and disassembly of the transmission.
