Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Hughes Performance’s New Torque Converter Dump Valve Kit

Hughes Performance’s New Torque Converter Dump Valve Kit

In recent years, automotive engineers have made significant progress in design and development of highly-efficient transmission solutions, which vividly manifest themselves in motorsports, notably in drag racing. Torque converter (TC) dumps are one of the innovative components that have already helped many racers to set impressive records. Now Hughes Performance starts selling a Dump Valve Kit that can be installed in any performance-oriented car equipped with an automatic transmission.

Learn more about Dump Valve systems and their purposes

The key purpose of a new product is to regulate the charging pressure inside the converter through solenoids to raise the stall speed of the TC. It can be extremely useful for boosted cars since they don’t make as much power down low, so manipulations with the pressure rates make the TC unit operate much better. The new technology allows using the stall speed parameter in a more effective way.

The company offers this product for the Powerglide and TH400 transmissions. The kit comes with a detailed installation instruction. Moreover, all are pre-made to simplify the process even further. There will be just several places where it is necessary to drill and tap the gearbox during the process of installation, and on the top of that you’ll just need to connect hoses and wiring – and it’s ready to run. It is not necessary to use a higher capacity pan unit with this kit and the solenoid only needs twelve volts to start running.

Founded in 1971, Hughes Performance has grown from a small workshop specialized in rebuilding of OEM torque converters into one of the leading suppliers of racing transmissions and high-performance TCs. Now the company’s product portfolio includes not only TCs and transmission units, but also a wide range of related components (planetaries & gear sets, valve bodies, oil pumps, friction plates, and much more) and different types of kits. Today, the company has a reputation of a reliable supplier of quality spare parts for racing applications.
