New E-motor Could Eliminate Transmissions
The most innovative and successful technical solutions for e-cars include not only battery units. Some manufacturers put in great efforts to design much more sophisticated e-motors. Recently, one innovative company Linear Labs from Texas announced that it has developed a new e-motor solution that can provide twice the amount of the torque, three times the power, and 10 % greater range for e-cars with the same dimensions as a conventional e-motor.
Brad Hunstable, the company’s CEO, named his product the "linear flux" Hunstable Electric Turbine. The wound motor operates with the help of 4 rotors (standard e-motors have 1 or 2), and the current can change the magnetic field in the cylinder-shaped stator to change the torque ratio to hp. The more rotors are engaged with the coils, the more power is generated. The coils are surrounded with magnets setting up so-called torque tube.
According to the engineers of the new e-motor, it is possible to exclude a gearbox from the design of e-cars. This solution will help automakers to save up to $8- $10 thousand per car.

Although e-cars currently available on the market are not equipped with the transmission systems that would shift gears like in standard fuel-driven cars, they all do have gearboxes that enhance the rpm rate to ensure the kind of performance that drivers expect. Linear Labs’ Hunstable electric machine generates enough torque to get a car rolling by changing the magnetic field to achieve the max level torque, then backs off to develop more hp for enhanced performance characteristics at higher speeds.
The company says it has 21 patents on the design and another 29 pending. Mr. Hunstable says the motor can be used for any kind of electric applications, from generators in windmills and water pumps to e-cars. Before inserting the new e-motor in cars, the product will have a debut in a scooter next year. The first e-car equipped with the super e-motor is expected to appear on the market in 2021.
