Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

BorgWarner at IAA 2019

BorgWarner (BW), one of the leading suppliers of automotive systems and spare parts, has recently presented its cutting-edge solutions for hybrid and electric vehicles at IAA 2019 in Frankfurt. The list of exhibited products included the following: battery packages, transmission solutions, P2 hybrid modules, eAxle iDM, innovative e-Turbo technology, e- motors, power electronics and thermal control units.

According to BW officials, the E-Mobility trend is currently gaining momentum. Many businesses face a lot of difficulties on the way to electrification, that’s where BorgWarner steps in with a wide range of products including tech solutions for different hybrid architectures and 100% EV solutions. With a wide range of tech solutions, the company will increase its market share and support automakers across the globe.

BW presented its latest space-saving battery packages for EVs. They include conventional cylindrical cells in compact designs for enhanced power density. Together with patented thermal technologies and battery control unit that helps to achieve impressive range and operation capacities. BW also showed its iDM solution. This unit comprises of specially designed power electronics with an e-motor and transmission tech in a single compact pack. Thanks to a sophisticated transmission system and cutting-edge drive motor technology, these modules are easily-installed at both axles. The modules ensure enhanced energy densities, torque, and NVH parameters.

P2 hybrid module

Other noteworthy showpieces are P2 hybrid modules which give automakers a great opportunity to convert their existing IC-engine-driven models to hybrids without the need to replace the motor or gearbox. It allows OEMs to significantly reduce expenditures and facilitate the process of hybridization. This functional and compact module include a 48-volt or HV electric traction motor, launch device, twin mass flywheel and engine disengaging clutch. Positioned between the engine and transmission, it can be applied with all transmission designs, and ensures high-performance and improved power density.

BW’s electric drive module (eDM) for electric vehicles

BW’s advanced electric drive module (eDM) includes the e-drive motor solution and well-tried eGearDrive transmission. The eGearDrive unit provides a highly-productive gear train with a space-saving, low-weight design ensuring more than 97 % efficiency. The eDM module is a tried-and-tested solution for battery-driven electric and P4 hybrid cars. BW’s products at the IAA exhibition show the company’s potential readiness to become one of the leading suppliers of automotive parts for the fast-growing market of hybrid and electric cars.
