Probably every transmission repair specialist was keen on LEGO constructions or at least enjoyed making some minor things with their hands. Here's the game taken to a new level of creativity!

Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Punch Powertrain Produces Its 100.000th VT5 Transmission

After the huge success of the VT2/VT3 transmission line in China, Punch Powertrain came up with a series of other innovative solutions. One of them was a VT5 transmission that hit the market just over a year ago. Within such a short period of time, the company managed to produce the 100.000th VT5 unit.

Engineered on the basis of the reliable VT3, the VT5 was designed to be applied on a wider range of cars. It has the torque capacity of up to 280 Nm and has an impressive ratio coverage for a single stage CVT (7.2). It comes with a torque converter, which has a positive impact on the driving experience and incline performance. This gear shifting solution gained popularity among car manufacturers, especially in the SUV segment.

In addition, this innovative transmission can be complemented with several optional features, such as start-stop and sailing. Moreover, the VT5 can be equipped with a special shift-by-wire system. It is also known for active controlled dual stage pump as well as innovative secondary shaft-assembly.

Key attributes of this transmission system are the following:

  • 28 mm pushbelt, single mode variator
  • Increased system pressure, max. 70 bar
  • Independent pulley pressure control
  • Reduced drag (cold start & churning loss)

Main elements of the VT5 transmission

This CVT solution is currently supplied to Punch Powertrain customers in China, namely clients Ford-JMC and DFSK. If during the 1-st year of production the main objective was to ensure its high level of quality, the VT5 unit now enters the next phase of its life cycle: introduction of possible modifications and cost optimization. Moreover, the engineering team of Punch Powertrain is currently preparing the release of new product variants, to meet the needs in the rapidly-changing auto market.
